Southern tradition, adapted from West African custom, brings either field-peas or the similar black-eyed peas to every New Year’s Day table. The earth-colored peas are symbolic of coins or pennies, serving as harbingers of future prosperity and good fortune. The peas accompany dark, leafy greens such as kale, collard, chard, mustard or turnip, which symbolize wealth, since green is the color of money. How lucky for us! A prosperous, wealthy “combo” abundant in dietary fiber, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant infused vitamins and minerals! (more…)
