Popcorn SnackSwinging by the drive-thru is one of the easiest ways to hinder your weight loss progress. Always having snacks on hand is a great way to ensure that you’ll have a healthy alternative to the many unhealthy food options that confront us each day.

Non-Perishable Snacks
Sometimes we are out longer than we plan and hunger strikes before our next meal. Or, sometimes we just feel like a “pick me up” snack while out and about or in the late afternoon at work. Always having one or two non-perishable snacks on hand is a great way to stay prepared.

  • Nutrition Bars are good to have on hand, and you can keep them in the glove box of your car (assuming the temperature isn’t extremely hot), or in your desk drawer. HMR bars are packed with nutrients so they will keep you full until your next planned meal, but they also taste delicious so you don’t feel like you’re missing out if others are enjoying donuts at a meeting.
  • Popcorn packs work well for that crunchy, salty snack hankering! Pop up a batch at home and lightly spray with non-stick coating spray (coconut or canola) and lightly salt. Pack up serving sizes into baggies and you’ve got a perfect grab n’ go snack.

Make Ahead Snacks
If you are planning on being out for a while and anticipate that hunger will strike, you can prepare snacks ahead of time to keep in a lunchbox or in the refrigerator at work.

  • Sliced Veggies and Fruits are the simplest and most obvious choices when you know that you will need a midday snack.
  • A “Pick Me Up Platter” which combines fruits and protein can be a delightful snack that is sure to keep your energy up during the day. This could include a bunch of grapes or sliced apples (or other fruit of choice) along with a boiled egg, Greek yogurt, or cottage cheese. This combination of natural sugars from fruit and protein from the egg and dairy will keep you full and energized, and it consists of several different items so it is ideal if you like to “graze”.
  • Turkey Roll-Ups similar to fruit roll-ups, a turkey roll up is just that – a slice of deli turkey rolled into a tube. You can mix it up by using different low fat sandwich meats, or fill your roll up with thinly sliced veggies and spreads like low-fat cream cheese. Secure the roll with a toothpick, throw it in a resealable baggie, and toss it in your lunchbox for a fast, healthy finger food you can eat on the go.

Preparation is key to any successful weight loss plan! Make sure that you have a couple snacks with you if plan on being out for a long day, and always have a few non-perishables handy just in case you are caught out longer than you anticipated.
