Fun Ways to Keep Active in the Summer Print

kayakingSummer is the perfect time to get your activity in without ever stepping foot in the gym. Here are a few ideas to help you find enjoyable activities that will contribute towards your weight loss goals.

  • Local Walking Tours
    Get out and explore on foot! Many cities offer guided walking tours through the city…it’s a great way to get in your PA the fun way. You can also just explore areas on your own, the key is to get walking and enjoy the city sights.
  • Take the Plunge
    Enjoy a summer cool down with water fitness! Aquatic exercises are a great way to enjoy the summer and burn some extra calories. And, most of the fitness activities you enjoy on land can be submerged for a “cooler”, fun, water activity. In fact, aqua jogging, water pilates and even aqua kickboxing are making a splash at your local fitness center. And, there’s nothing wrong with sticking to the tried and true water PA…swimming laps!
  • Go Parks and Rec
    Your local city most likely has tons of classes for both adults and children. There are low cost fitness classes, and you may also find courses including survival basics, hiking, or kayaking which all involve getting outdoors and exploring local parks. These types of courses are especially great if you feel “bored” by exercising because you will be engaged with class and not thinking about how many calories you are burning.
  • Get Pedaling
    Summer is a great time to take to cycling your way around! You can take to the streets or find some trails if you prefer to get into nature. It’s also a good time to bike instead of drive to your destinations…for example, try biking to work, to the grocery store or to your gym! Be sure to pack some water and wear your helmet (and if you’re cycling in the evening or early morning, be sure you have lights on your bike so others can see you!).

Involving yourself in a variety of summer activities is a great way to effortlessly aid your weight loss. Even if you are so engaged in the activity that it doesn’t feel like a workout, be sure to bring plenty of water and keep yourself well hydrated.
