8 Ways to Enjoy a Healthy Vacation Print

Vacation time can be tricky when it comes to diet and exercise, but with a bit of planning you can make it work and still have fun. Whether you’re planning a road trip or flying to your summer vacation destination, don’t forget to pack a plan for healthy eating and physical activity.

  1. Make a batch of healthy snacks and divide them up into individual baggies. Fruits and vegetables are a great choice here – blueberries, apples, grapes, cucumbers, bell pepper strips, carrots and sugar snap peas.
  2. Tote water or flavored waters with you – try Crystal Light on the Go packets, or slices of cucumber and herbs for an easy flavor addition to your bottled water.   3. Skip the drive thru and the expensive airport food court by packing HMR foods as your fast-food. That way when you’re stuck and can’t stop by the store, you’ll be prepared with a healthy, low-calorie meal.
  4. Stick to the side menu for hidden nutrition and portion control at the restaurant. Steamed veggies, fruit plates and even cereals are found here. Order 2 – 3 items for a light and nutritious bite.
  5. Go for the fruit and low-fat yogurt at your hotel’s continental breakfast (grab extra for the day). Starting your day out with healthy carbohydrates and protein will leave you feeling satisfied and full of energy.
  6. Pack a good pair of walking or running shoes (or wear them as you travel). Skipping the taxi cab and walking to nearby activities will not only save you money, but will also help you burn extra calories.
  7. Plan one physical activity event each day. There are TONS of great activities that will get your heart pumping, so be mindful when you are planning your trip and make sure you get your activity in. You might plan a hike or walking tour, or save a few hours to swim on the beach or at the hotel pool.
  8. Walk to the restaurant for lunch. Because walking is something we do every day we can forget how great it is as an exercise! Remember, you’re still trying to burn 2,000 calories a week, and a brisk 15 minute walk every day will quickly help you reach that goal.

When you’re prepared for a healthy vacation with proper walking shoes, healthy snacks, and activities planned, not only will you not have to worry about gaining weight back, but you’ll be on track to continue with your weight loss even as you enjoy the trip. Happy travels!
