Weight TrainingHave you considered adding strength training to your exercise routine? Although it may not burn as many calories per minute as other activities, there are significant benefits of weight training:

  • Prevents loss of lean body mass that occurs with dieting or aging
  • Strengthens bones and connective tissue along with muscles
  • Helps change your body composition, which helps shape your body
  • Helps keep you strong and active as you get older

Be sure to check with your physician before you start any weight-training routine. If you’re ready to start, there are plenty of resources online or in your local bookstore. You may also want to consider making an appointment with an experienced trainer at your local gym.

(And don’t forget…you can count weight-training calories as part of your PA! It’s considered a “medium-intensity” activity using the HMR Calorie System.)
