Fitness EquipmentWith busy schedules, shorter days and colder temperatures – engaging in regular physical activity can be tricky. You may want to consider investing in a quality piece of home exercise equipment to combat those winter physical activity barriers. Here are some tips when buying home gym equipment:

The Treadmill
A treadmill is a great option for both the runner and the walker!

  • Horsepower
This relates to the longevity and performance of the equipment. Look for something with at least 2.5 continuous duty horsepower.
  • Running Surface
Belt width is important for comfort and form and should be at least 17″. A belt length of at least 48″ is important consideration for your stride and form. Also, look for the latest in shock absorption technology to reduce the impact to your joints while running/walking.
  • Incline
Smooth, motorized incline options are great for variety, intensity and comfort during your workout.

The Elliptical
An Elliptical is ideal for those looking to a lower impact alternative to the treadmill.

  • Adjustable Resistance
Look for easily adjustable resistance in your elliptical for adding intensity and variety to your workouts.
  • Movement
The movement should be smooth during forward and backward pedaling, not choppy.
  • Stability Handles and Movable Bars
Look for comfortable stability handles and movable bars.

There are many other equipment options to choose from. For any machine you should look for simple, easy to use consoles, additional safety features, and warranties. Do your research and compare products and most importantly – try before you buy!

*Always consult with your physician prior to beginning any exercise program.
